Okay, I drew this seven years ago, and it's actually the start of the story of how I got into syndicated cartoons. While surfing at Ocean Beach way back in the day, I surfed into a patch of seaweed. It was...a moment. So I thought I'd document it for funsies.
Later on, I got asked to create a comic strip based on Pop-Eye's 90th anniversary for King Features. I thought Pop-Eye! Neat! But...I don't actually know much Pop-eye lore off the top of my head. So I asked my editor: Can I make Pop-eye surf? Unlikely anyone else would draw him surfing. I'm a one-trick pony, but it's a good trick.
Bloop! And in 2019 that was the start of my syndication career. A year later, I would get asked to try out for Mark Trail. It's nice and kind of bizarre that this is where my cartooning career took off. Because I fell into a pile of seaweed while surfing.
My life is weird.
Happy October, my read-or-dies!
