You can tell this is an old comic because I'm still in Los Angeles. I'm actually wrong about the fall. Here in San Diego, the waves get angrier and meaner in the fall. And like...good. I like it like that. And hey once the weather cools down, I can send my torn up spring suits in for repairs.

I had to come up with an explanation for Lucy's fluctuating design. I made this joke because the dude who inspired Lucy grew out a beard. And I felt like making some extremely location specific jokes about it. But a big, fluffy beard is a sign of life. And I feel like sometimes folks get self-conscious about it. Especially if you've got some silver hairs in your beard. Embrace it. It's your wizard beard!
Okay, so rewatching Point Break as an adult made me realize what a formative experience this movie was to me. I'm happy to be able to relate this wacky experience into the most dessicated form of four silly comic panels. I'm only sorry there isn't a cringe 90's cartoon adaptation of Point Break. It would've ruled.
I love so much about this movie I could go on for days. I love how we're expected to believe tiny baby Keanu Reeves has never been around beach culture or surfing. Or that he's a credible FBI agent. I love how Lori Petty's only reason for being in this movie is so we don't get think Patrick and Keanu are getting kissy with each other. I love how they used Ronald Reagan's mask as the lead guy. Considering how much Reagan has cost us, it's beyond brilliant.
If I have one criticism for this movie, it's that they don't let Gary Busey surf. Yes, Gary Busey is in this movie. And he is a surfer. He did a surf movie back in the 70's called "Big Wednesday." He can actually surf and they don't let him surf in this movie. Talk about leaving money on the table.
But otherwise, this is a perfect movie. And it's a very me-movie.
This Surfriday is dedicated to the weirdos we see at the beach. We all got the image of surfers being these totally ripped folks, but sometimes you see weirdos out there.
I really did see Dominic Purcell out there though. He's the guy who played Drake in Blade 3. If that isn't an awesome find I dont know who is. When I walked past the guy on the shore, I smiled and nodded. I feel like that's the best Los Angeles etiquette for clocking a celebrity. Smile, nod knowingly, and move on.
I'll let you know if I see any other Draculas on the surf. Happy start of fall!
I remember reading a social post where someone said “AI is making everyone sound flat and samey-samey. Now is the time to be your weirdest, most unhinged self.” And I was like “Isn’t that all I ever give you? How dare the internet accuse me of being mid. So I threatened to write a comic about surf wax. And then I drew it.
So here’s an expanded review of the surf waxes I’ve discussed here.
Mr. Zoggs Sex Wax - This is the one everyone starts on. It’s fine. I’ve tried it and it does the job, I guess. I feel like it can be a little stiff as a wax. I like my waxes to be a little more buttery and creamy. But since it’s the wax most everyone starts on, it’s baby’s first surf wax. Bonus round for all the many dick jokes I can make with this wax.
Sticky Bumps - The San Diego standard. Sticky Bumps’ warehouse is based in Vista, CA. I really dig their surf wax because it’s a bit softer and more buttery than the other waxes I’ve tried. I love how soft and easy this wax goes on. I even ordered their Tour Series recently, which is even tackier than the normal Sticky Bumps wax. I’ll let you guys know how the Tour series works out.
Mrs. Palmers - I was very surprised by this wax. I happened to receive a bar of this wax free with another surf purchase I made, and wow. It’s sticky! I love a good sticky wax that spreads easily. I would’ve bought more bars of this wax, but the easiest places to find this stuff online is Amazon and we all know I ain’t supporting Jeff Bezos’s entitled ass. But if I find a local surf shop that sells this stuff again, I’ll pick it up again.
How’s that for weird? How dare anyone accuse me of being mid. Let this never happen again.
So I think I found a way to plug my cartoons into AfterEffects to get the similar hand-held feel of my old Tiktok Videos. It’s not so bad, right?
